BOARD GOALS
2008-2009

The Board of Education of the Byram Hills School
District,
in collaboration with District staff, will maintain a vision of excellence and
strive for continuous improvement in our educational programs and school
district operations.
1. Succession Planning and Leadership Development
The Board of Education will continue its dialogue with
the administration and community on administrative changes throughout the
district and will support practices designed to ensure the success of new and
transitioning administrators. The Board
will provide updates to the community on succession planning and will continue
efforts to hire and create a diverse faculty and staff.
2. Negotiations with the Byram Hills Teacher’s
Association
The Board will focus on concluding
a fair, equitable and fiscally responsible contract with the BHTA and will
endeavor to successfully complete negotiations before the expiration of the
current contract on June 30, 2009.
3. Curriculum Focus and Practices for Preparing Students
for the 21st Century
a. The Board will establish a World Languages Study Committee. This advisory committee will provide
information to the Board and community on:
1. Best practices for teaching World Language
acquisition,
2. and Curriculum and budgetary implications of
potential changes to the current program.
b. The
Board will continue to support Sustainability Education and best green
practices. The Board, through the administration, will collaborate with
the Town of North Castle and/or other outside partners to increase
awareness of sustainability issues within the school and larger community.
c. The
Board will continue to support the Cultural Proficiency program and the
creation of a culturally proficient school community in which students and
staff develop the skills and habits of respectful dialogue.
d. The Board will continue to support the administration in the development of a
system of performance assessments.
4. Communications
a. To improve communication with the community and
facilitate access to District information, the Board will support
administrative efforts to redesign the Byram Hills School
District website during the current school year.
b. The Board, with the administration, will work to provide
on-line access to Board of Education policies through the District website.
c. The Board will conduct a survey to assess the
effectiveness of BOBCAT TV, in both broadcast and on-line video streaming
formats.
5. Fiscal Accountability
a. The Board will
continue careful planning and oversight of the District budget with an emphasis
on providing the community with a fiscally responsible budget that meets the
educational needs of our students.
b. Facilities - The Board will continue to analyze
the feasibility of obtaining community support for a wash bay facility, shared
by the Town of North Castle and funded in part by a state grant, for an
improved District Transportation facility. In addition, the Board will consider
funding options for these improvements and the feasibility of presenting the
Transportation facility project to the voters during the 2009-2010 budget
cycle.
