Attendance Policy Update
The district adopted a new Attendance Policy effective for the 2002-03 school year; Assistant Principals Andy Irvin (BHHS), Barbara Topiol (HCC), Lisa Doty (WA), and Magda Parvey (CH) were present to assist Dr. Taylor in providing an overview and answering Board questions. Their data on student attendance and tardiness indicated visible improvement since the policy has been in effect. The administrators voiced appreciation for parent and student cooperation with the aims of the policy—not least of all the need to be present in order to keep up with school work—but said there was more work yet to

be done. In the 2003-04 school year, Attendance Policy standards move up a notch, and the effort to enlist parent and student commitment will continue.

Policy Review
Board discussion also included another installment in the ongoing effort to review the district's entire set of policies. Several of these policies were referred back to committee for further revision.

Textbook Approval
New textbooks for middle school mathematics were approved by the Board.

Staff Reports
Mr. Chambers called public attention to the new display of student artwork now gracing the district office. Wampus third-graders, under the guidance of art teacher Nina Elton produced the current show, which is one in an ongoing series.

Mr. Carlson updated the Board on the State Education Department's review of the district's application for additional portable classrooms to be put in place for use beginning in September 2003. Board discussion touched not only on the portable classrooms, but on the Board's next major point of focus in its continuing goal on "Successful Management of Enrollment Growth" —planning for brick and mortar construction of additional classrooms.

Executive Session
At the end of its public meeting, the Board adjourned to Executive Session for consideration of negotiations, legal, and personnel matters.

PRE-SCHOOL MEETING
Informal dialogue occurred before the regular meeting, at the invitation of the Board, with members of the Preschool Parent Association. Some of those preschool parents also took advantage of a tour of The Coman Hill School, with particular attention to the portable classrooms.
