extensive process including requests for proposals and subsequent
interviews, intends to contract with the firm of Perkins Eastman
for architect assistance, and the firm of T2C for construction
management. The process of weighing needs for classroom space,
considering alternatives, and actually building the new space,
is expected to consume considerable time and attention in
the new school year and beyond, with the goal of providing
new space by September 2006. Meanwhile, both at Coman Hill
and Wampus, a few portable classrooms will be utilized to
keep pace with enrollment.
Staff Reports
Deputy Superintendent Jacquelyn Taylor reported on the District's
over all progress in the hiring picture for 2003-04. Also
discussed were the recent State difficulties around Regents
examinations, including the Commissioner's decision to invalidate
the results of the Math A Regents, and continuing concerns
about the scoring formula for the Physics Regents.
Board Reports
Committee assignments for the new year were discussed by the
Board, with an expectation that the assignments would be completed
by the time of the Board's August 28 meeting. A decision was
also made to hold a brief public meeting on July 17, following
the work session on Athletic Facilities.
In keeping with its usual practice, the Board adjourned from
the public meeting into executive session for discussion of
personnel and legal matters.

JULY 17 WORK SESSION AND BUSINESS AGENDA
WORK SESSION: Athletic Facilities Project Update
Two consultants from The Thomas Group (Scott Hughes and Brad
Newhouse) were present to dialogue with the Board about the
latest developments in design details and schedule considerations.
The discussion included design questions on the Wellness Center,
the track and bleacher locations, and the location of a utility
building.
The Board also discussed the evolving schedule for the facilities
work, with the expectation that the field at Coman Hill and
the tennis courts at the high school would be reconstructed
in the fall of 2003. The larger parts of the project, including
the major fields renovations at the high school, are scheduled
for the spring and summer of 2004.
In keeping with the practice of Board work sessions, any
decisions were deferred to the business meeting which followed.
BUSINESS AGENDA
A brief business meeting was held to allow for several staffing
appointments, a security services bid, additions to the Board
meeting calendar, and several decisions on the Athletic Facilities
Project design details.
High School Assistant Principal Appointments
With thanks for his service, the Board accepted the resignation
of Steve Garcia as assistant principal of the high school,

Board Meeting Calendar
Pursuant to discussion from its last several meetings, the
Board finalized its own meeting calendar for 2003-04, which
will be shown in the
District master calendar to be mailed home during August.
Athletic Facilities Design Decisions
Summarizing the topics of discussion from the work session,
the Board made decisions about the several design features
under discussion:
- The concession stand/utility building to be located in
a central area of the fields complex at the high school;
- Wellness Center 1200 square foot addition as an expansion
of the existing space;
- Track/bleachers to be located to take advantage of the
existing slope on the east side of the new multi-purpose
field.
Again, a brief executive session on a single legal matter
followed the public meeting.
