| The Board enjoyed extensive
opportunities for dialogue with the staff members, which resulted
in lively give and take. The staff members present for this
discussion included Rekha Singh (CH and HCC), Jane
delVillar (CH), Al Lovelace (WA), Sasha Davies
(WA), Marylee Liebowitz (HCC), Theresa Slosek
(HCC), Tim Kaltenecker (BHHS), Bob DiMartino (HS),
and Joanna Nash (HS).
Highlights of the discussion included an overview of technology
uses at each of the District's four schools, including specific
examples of student/teacher interaction in various subjects,
using various software. The consistent themes at all four
schools included uses of technology that are developmentally
appropriate, that serve as a supporting tool to instruction,
supplement the curriculum, encourage collaboration and creativity,
and provide support for future exploration.
District-wide initiatives around technology, such as professional
staff development and data management were highlighted, along
with other initiatives like the District's web page, student
electronic portfolios in English Language Arts, curriculum
mapping, student data analysis, and "Web Quest"
activities. Also touched was the inventory of computers and
other hardware available to staff and students, with glimpses
of the various software programs used.
Board questions and comments ranged across a number of areas.
The uses of technology in laboratory settings and classrooms
were explored; Internet safety was examined; various hardware
and software applications were highlighted. In the latter
category, particular attention was given to the emerging uses
of "Smart Boards" and the degree to which the various
software in use provides capability
|
for differentiation according to individual student needs.
At the conclusion of the report, several of the District's
accomplishments were noted, including the achievement of 100%
faculty participation in the use of technology to support
instruction, and the District's recognition with a "Pioneer
Award for Technology Innovation." Board members expressed
great appreciation for the quality of the staff members' presentation,
and great confidence in the District's continuing efforts
in the uses of technology. The complete set of presentation
materials is available upon request from Dr. Taylor's office.
Other Business
Administrative staff reports included Mr. Carlson's update
on the Athletic Facilities Project, which is soon to result
in visible work on fields across the District. Dr. Taylor
updated the Board on progress toward staffing needs for 2004-05,
which included early success in hiring for teaching positions
at all four schools, and ongoing efforts to fill several leadership
positions, including two department chairs. Mr. Chambers provided
snapshots of recent student and staff activities at each of
the four schools.
High school foreign language teacher Bob DiMartino was applauded
for his selection to the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship
for Study Abroad in the summer of 2004-he was one of only
ten teachers across the nation so honored.
Board reports included an update on the impending grant cycle
of the Byram Hills Education Foundation, and the suggestion
that outreach to community members who do not have children
in the school could be offered through invitations to attend
musical concerts and other such events.
In keeping with usual practice, the Board adjourned from
the public meeting

to executive session for the purpose of discussing several
