CURRICULUM CONVERSATION
Continuing its practice of occasional informational
sessions focused on a particular aspect of curriculum,
the Board hosted Social Studies Department Chair Kim
Lapple for a question and answer session on that particular
piece of the 6-12 program. Virtually the whole department
turned out for the conversation as well, and a few
even joined in to supplement
Ms. Lapple's responses.
Conversation ranged from overview questions of shared
vision and department collaboration to more specific
matters like preparation for 8th grade tests and reviews
of the new Advanced Placement course in World History.
Ms. Lapple was able to sketch out the department's
commitment to "bringing meaning to content,"
and their progressive approach to the development
of skills, like research and writing, across the 6-12
continuum. Aspects of the program receiving specific
mention included the new initiative called

"Facing History and Ourselves," and a recent
screening by high school sophomores of the new film,
"Hotel Rwanda."
Differentiation efforts, aimed at meeting various
students at their individual levels of need, were
described by several teachers from both HCC and BHHS,
as were the department's efforts to balance authentic
assessment practices with necessary preparation for
required State testing.
Discussion ended with compliments from the Board
to Ms. Lapple and the teachers, and a hearty round
of shared applause.
BUSINESS AGENDA
The Board approved several items (shown in an accompanying
box) from its customary consent agenda. Notable among
those items were the resignation of Jacqueline Getz
as Wampus Principal, effective February 25, for family
reasons; the per- diem appointment of former Bedford
Village Principal Joanne Vale as Wampus Interim Principal;
and the resignation for purposes of retirement of
Winnie Barry. Ms. Getz was thanked for her year and
a half of contributions to the District, while Ms.
Vale was offered congratulations and encouragement
for her commitment to Wampus until a new principal
can be named. (The search has begun, with a target
of July 1 for competition.)
Winnie Barry, although not present at the meeting,
was lauded as a loyal employee for her service as
a secretary in the
