Note: Passing of Former Superintendent Dr.
Bruce McGill
Board President Dr. Eve Rice noted with respect the
death of Dr. Bruce McGill, the first superintendent
in the Byram Hills Central School District, who served
here from 1968-1972. In addition to Dr. McGill's contributions
in Byram Hills, he served in many other positions
of educational leadership, including his presidency
of the Educational Records Bureau.
SPECIAL REPORTS: Special Services Annual Report
Co-directors Judith Hirschhorn and Rhonda Pfeiffer
were on hand to present the Special Services Report,
with assistance from several staff members. High school
teachers Laura Jones and Joy Nowak described the collaborative
Spanish program now in its second year; Coman Hill
teachers Laura Borneman and Robin Zilli, along with
psychologist Dorrie Bernstein, described the special
kindergarten

Review of data was also part of the report, which
is available in full from the Special Education office
or the Superintendent's office. Data highlights included
a "classification rating" of 11.4% as compared
to a Statewide average above 12%. Referrals of preschool
children, the details of special placements for youngsters
aged 5-21, and a summary of graduation or declassification
for students exiting special education were also part
of the presentation.
Along with the report was the Board's approval of
the Special Education Department's Plan and Report
on Placement, 2004-2006.
Board Goal Update: Facilities Management
Continuing its periodic reviews on the progress of
facilities bonds for classroom and core space ($47MM)
and athletic facilities ($4.6MM), the Board was again
updated by the District's consulting architects and
construction managers. The classroom and core facilities
work scheduled for all four schools is proceeding
through design and State Education Department approval
steps in three stages-first Byram Hill High School,
followed by Coman Hill and Wampus, and then H.C. Crittenden
Middle School. State approval for the high school
plans is expected any day, to be followed by immediate
bidding on the work, which should allow actual construction
to
