SPECIAL REPORT: BOARD GOAL SETTING FOR 2005-06
Continuing its discussions begun in its annual Retreat,
the Board moved toward consensus on goals for the
2005-06 school year. Consensus emerged for four topics:
- Extra-curricular Study/Negotiations
- System for On-going Curriculum and Program
Review
- Transportation Study
- Byram Hills Administrators Association Contract
Negotiations.
Also considered at some length, but not ultimately
rising to consensus, were other potential goals on
Diversity Awareness, Assessments of Student

Work, Communications,
and a Leadership Succession Plan. Advocacy for more
concerted attention to Diversity Awareness, while that
item did not ultimately appear on the Goal list, persuaded
the Board to attempt a reworking of the District's Mission
Statement, in order to raise the issue to a higher level
of priority. Communications priorities were also discussed,
with the eventual understanding that the on-going efforts
of the Board should always include communications. On
Assessments of Student Work, discussion included the
expected impact of new State and
Federal testing requirements, and the expressed hope
that such testing could be balanced against Byram Hills'
own locally-designed assessments such as portfolios,
and other demonstrations of mastery which might be more
meaningful for our own students. Succession planning,
while acknowledged as important to the maintenance of
strong leadership in the District, was seen as an administrative
task, rather than a Board Goal.
The October 11 meeting was targeted as the date for
formal adoption of a
