Definitions of Instructional Approaches
Services for Advanced Learners are
provided through a variety of formats.
Pull-Out Program : This method provides services for Advanced Learners outside of the regular
classroom.
Push-In Program: The enrichment teacher goes into the regular classroom
and extends and deepens the curriculum by working with a group of
Advanced Learners.
Whole Class: This type of instruction provides differentiation
for all class members based on the individual needs of students.
Differentiated Instruction: This form of instruction utilizes different approaches
to content, process and product to meet the needs of individual students.
When designing lessons, student
differences in readiness, interest, learning needs and learning styles
are taken into account.
Flexible Regrouping: This approach allows students to learn together
with children from other classes. Students are
grouped based on readiness and learning styles. Movement
among groups is common.
Intentional Placement: Advanced Learners are clustered with intellectual
peers within heterogeneous classrooms or teams on the elementary level.
Curriculum Compacting: This strategy eliminates repetition of previously
mastered material, increases the challenge level of the regular curriculum,
and provides time for appropriate enrichment while ensuring mastery
of basic skills.
