Learning Communities For Teachers: A
Professional Development Model For Technology Integration
56th Annual ASCD Conference
Reaching for Balance: Resolving Educational
Dilemmas
March 17-19, 2001, Boston, MA
The
following Web-based activities were created during our initial
efforts as professional learning communities:
Coman Hill Elementary
School
- Old
MacDonald's Farm
The kindergarten learning community created this Web activity
as part of a science unit on chicks and ducks. The essential
question in this WebQuest is, "How do chicks and ducks grow?"
In it students investigate the life cycle of chicks and ducks
as they familiarize themselves with use of technology.
Wampus Elementary School
- Invention
Island The
third grade learning community explores inventors and inventions
in a game show format. Students identify the challenges and
problems of inventing. They also look at how the invention
influenced daily life by researching a specific inventor.
H. C. Crittenden Middle
School
- What's
So Great About Opera
The middle school music department created this WebQuest. Seventh
graders work together in small groups to learn about opera and
to create a program book for the opera, "Turandot."
Byram Hills High School
- Career
Inventory for Sophomores The
BHHS counseling department learning community created this Web
activity to assess students' aptitudes, skills and personality
. This is an example of a practical and authentic use of the
Web to identify possible career paths and begin to encourage
students to think about career goals.
