World Languages Study 2025
PURPOSE OF STUDY
- To refresh our knowledge of the research on FLES since 2009.
- To seek appropriate opportunities that prepare students for language learning.
The essential questions to drive our study include:
What is the impact of second language learning in elementary school on student language proficiency and other skills and knowledge in the upper grades?
Considering current research and best practices in elementary world language learning, what are programmatic, curricular, and instructional opportunities that could be implemented effectively in Byram Hills?
PROCESS
The District will convene a study group of teachers, administrators, Board of Education members, and parents/guardians to read and discuss pertinent studies and literature on language learning and the implications on schools. Various presentations will be made at public meetings, faculty meetings, and principal’s coffees to share our insights as we develop our common understandings.
The study group will consist of volunteer teachers, administrators, Board of Education members, and parents.
While membership is limited, additional public presentations and meetings will be scheduled throughout the year.
