Building the Skills Students Need to Lead, Learn, and Thrive

As schools prepare students for an increasingly complex world, academic knowledge alone is no longer enough. Students must also develop the ability to manage themselves, think critically, persevere through challenges, collaborate effectively, and take ownership of their learning. These capacities are rooted in executive function.

This practical and engaging mini-course supports K–12 educators in designing classroom environments and instructional experiences that intentionally strengthen the executive function skills students need to become productive, responsible, and empowered leaders of the future.

Aligned with the Byram Hills School District vision of preparing students to excel as citizens and leaders of the twenty-first century, participants will explore how classroom routines, instructional design, and student-driven learning experiences can build independence, organization, self-regulation, persistence, collaboration, and reflective thinking.

Across three interactive sessions and between-session classroom application experiences, educators will gain ready-to-use tools and strategies that help students:

• Strengthen organization, planning, and time management
• Improve focus, self-regulation, and task initiation
• Build persistence, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
• Develop greater independence, ownership of learning, and leadership capacity

Grounded in research and classroom practice, this course helps educators embed executive function development into everyday instruction across grade levels and content areas.

Grounded in NCTM's Principles to Actions, this series provides K–5 educators with an understanding of the eight Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, such as establishing clear goals, implementing tasks that promote reasoning, facilitating meaningful mathematical discourse, posing purposeful questions, and eliciting and using evidence of student thinking.

Participants will build classroom-ready strategies for each practice, examine what strong implementation looks like across grade levels, and reflect on the instructional beliefs that shape how consistently these practices take hold. Educators will leave with shared vocabulary, concrete tools, and a clear lens for strengthening research-based mathematics instruction and high-quality teaching.

This 6-session book study explores the Four Core Practice Sets from Ambitious Science Teaching (AST) and translates them directly into elementary practice. 

Throughout the study, participants will analyze how these core practices show up in their current instruction and evaluate the district’s core science program, Mystery Science. Together, we will bridge the gap between curriculum materials and ambitious teaching by learning how to adapt, enhance, and maximize Mystery Science units to foster equitable, evidence-based student thinking aligned with the New York State P–12 Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS).

1. Payment for in-service credit:

• Payment should be sent to the District Office at the time of registration.
• Please make checks payable to Byram Hills and send to the District Office, attention: Colin O'Connor.
• For a ½-credit course (7½-hours), the fee is $100.
• For a 1-credit course (15-hours), the fee is $200.
• For a 2-credit course (30-hours), the fee is $400.
• For a 3-credit course (45-hours), the fee is $600.

2. Audit a course:

• At times, certain courses may be offered for "audit." To audit a course means that the District will pay for the course, however, teachers are not provided a stipend for participation. 

3. Stipends: 

• At times, certain courses, offered in the summer only, may provide teachers a stipend for participation at the current summer curriculum workshop rate. 

All registrations are to be done through My Learning Plan

Course registration is limited. Teachers will be admitted to the course in the order in which they submit payment. Approval will not be granted until receipt of payment.

Please note that courses may be cancelled if the minimum enrollment requirements are not met within 5 days prior to the start of the course.

Teachers who withdraw from a course must provide notice no less than 5 school days prior to the start of the course in order to receive a refund.
