The Athletic Placement Process (APP) is a program that permits exceptional 7th and 8th grade students to try out for a JV or Varsity sport, while still in Middle School.

- How is this process initiated, and what are the steps involved?
- Recommendation - A student may be recommended for the Athletic Placement Process (APP) by a Byram Hills coach or physical education teacher.
- Invitation - The Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics will review the recommendation and, if appropriate, extend an official invitation to participate in the Advanced Placement Process.
- To qualify for a high school tryout under the Athletic Placement Process, the invited student must satisfy all health exam and health history requirements and demonstrate sufficient readiness across four core areas:
- personal and social responsibility;
- sport-specific skill development;
- knowledge of the game; and
- physical fitness.
- Parental Consent/Permission Form - One week prior to the official start date of the season. Completed APP permission forms should be submitted to the HCC Assistant to the Athletic Director: Fall and Spring: Mr. Ted Repa, trepa@byramhills.net, Winter: Mr. Jared Christian, jchristian@byramhills.net
- Tryout - An invitation to participate in the APP does not guarantee placement on a high school team. Students must successfully complete all components of the APP, including medical clearance, academic, attendance, and disciplinary review, and earn a roster spot through the team's regular tryout process.
**No 7th or 8th grade athlete may take a roster spot of an eligible high school athlete on a Freshman or Junior Varsity team. 8th grade students may be considered for any interscholastic high school team while 7th grade students may only be considered for sports designated by NYSED as non-contact sports.**
- My child is entering 9th grade in the Fall, do I need to apply for APP for the Fall season?
- No. APP is only for current middle school students who wish to play "up" at the High School Level.
- My child is in or entering 7th grade and they are an exceptional athlete, can they apply for the APP?
- My child is entering 7th grade and cannot attempt the APP because they play a contact sport. Is there any other way to play for the school?
- Yes. Most middle school students participate in Modified Sports, which is our 7th and 8th grade athletic program.
- Are all Modified Sports open to 7th grade?
- No. Usually they are, but in circumstances where there is an overwhelming sign-up of 8th graders, we would be unable to open a sport up to the 7th grade.
