Byram Hills Science Research Seniors Capture Awards at Upstate JSHS Science Competition

Byram Hills High School seniors in the Authentic Science Research Program competed in the Upstate Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, with three students winning awards.

Chloe Bernstein, Ethan Cherry, Alaska Fairbanks and Caleb Palappillil presented their work in the speaker presentation competition, and Aliza Hammond and Max Teitelbaum competed in the poster presentation event.

Competing in the Medicine and Health category, Chloe won first place and then competed against the four other first-place winners. She finished third overall, which qualified her to compete at the 61st National JSHS in Virginia Beach, Virginia, next month. This will be the eighth consecutive year that at least one Byram Hills High School student has qualified for the national event.

Ethan and Caleb each won second place in their category. Ethan competed in Behavior and Caleb competed in the Computer Science category.

“Congratulations to our students who represented our program so well at Upstate JSHS,” said Stephanie Greenwald, director of the Byram Hills science research program. “Our students exemplify a deep understanding of science, fluency in mathematics, great communication skills, an awareness of global issues and an appreciation for beautiful and effective visual displays.”

The event was held at the University at Albany on March 8-9.

The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a STEM competition sponsored by the Defense Department that encourages students to conduct original research and recognizes them for outstanding achievement.
