Physical Education and Health

Mission Statement

Through a coordinated school health approach that addresses physical education, health education, a healthy school environment, school health services, and school nutrition services, students will develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge that will enable them to pursue a health enhancing lifestyle.

Philosophy of Physical Education

Educators have long recognized that children and youth need physical activity as well as academic pursuits to do their best. Physical activity is essential for healthy growth and development.

Through student centered experiences that address the psycho-motor, cognitive and affective domains of learning, the physical education program serves to help develop a positive attitude toward a physically active lifestyle.

Through learning experiences focused on fundamental motor, non-loco motor and manipulative skills, individual; dual; and team sports, physical fitness activities and safety education, students will learn to recognize and demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior. Students will understand that participation in physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.

Philosophy of Health Education:

The intent of health education is to motivate students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and avoid or reduce health-related risk behaviors. The health education program will provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to be healthy for a lifetime.

Health education is a skills based curriculum with the ultimate goal of producing health literate citizens. Through the application of decision-making, interpersonal communication, advocacy, self management skills, goal setting, and the ability to access health information, services, and products, students are prepared to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, responsible and productive citizens, self-directed learners and effective communicators.
